You know how almost every examination that tests your grasp over the English language has this question after the most mundane "Unseen Comprehension" passage- "Write a suitable title for this passage."
Well, the aforementioned Douglas Adams quote seems a fitting opening for one of the most sarcastically and intelligently essays I've read. Wave hello to "The Lowest Animal" by Mark Twain.
Yes, I admit Huck Finn was one of my favourite fictional characters growing up, (What's the use you learning to do right, when it's troublesome to do right and ain't no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same? is still as endearing today as it was when I first read it!) but it was after reading this essay and realizing that a book like Letters to The Earth existed, that I finally accord Twain the status of a literary genius!
(Hint, my 18th birthday is coming up in 6 months. :D)
Although this essay has been written very obviously as a satire and we can only guess if these are the thoughts genuinely echoed by the author, it is sharp, crisp and surprisingly well-supported in logic and argument. He uses rhetoric and wit to prove that man, rather than ascending from animals like Darwin proposed, actually descended from animals.
He goes on to write, and substantiate with examples, how man is consciously loose in morals, is territorial, experiences the desire to seek revenge and subsequently is the only animal that practices cruelty and engage in organized crime and mutilation. Twain's remark on the hypocrisy of patriotism is hilarious in particular.
"He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other peoples countries, and keep them from grabbing slices of his. And in the intervals between campaigns, he washes the blood off his hands and works for the universal brotherhood of man, with his mouth."
What separates this essay from so many others is that his arguments, no matter how flimsy they seem at the outset, are backed by several studies and social experiments. This isn't sitcom-inspired satire, this is intelligent sarcastic writing.
My opinion? No, I don't think man is the lowest animal.
By their very DNA structure and the complexity of their neuron functions, man should be the greatest. It is its vices that hold it back from being superior, virtue-wise.
But then again, virtues are subjective, aren't they?
Humans and animals make bad judgment calls alike.
Otherwise why would that fly come and sit on my hand right now, and expect not to be killed? :P

Incredible! Makes me really long to read this.
But you know, Adams once said something really cool, and he wasnt jesting.
He was talking about how we mustn't think of the tree of life as a hierarchy..that no one's sitting at the top of a pile. That all species have their unique genetic jackpots..
Man, for all his self-proclaimed superiority, cannot run like a cheetah or withstand pressures of 3 atms like a shark..and you know, Adams is really perceptive and really generous that way..
He wrote this really awesome book called Last Chance to See, which is about speciesism..try it, you'll love it! Its really funny!
It's available on the internet, only. I just checked. Here. :)

or like the stupid moth.. who can see the tubelight or bulb.. but cant see the spinning fan it hits when in pursuit of light...
thats bad judgement call..its plain stupid.. and man is stupid too..
I wish you had that "post a comment" link like everyone else so i can post them from work :P Can you change it for me pls? I think you have to enable - open comments in a new window" setting or something.... TY if u do and even if u dont.
Nice post this.... very deep and meaningful. For instance, do u know that the G7 nations meant to prevent and control Nuclear arms are the owners of this weapons? They are also the largest sellers of weapons in the world! Peace for these guys = a bad economy!! In the time of recession, Arms and ammunition was the only industry to post profit consistently! The UN also proved its impotency by not acting out against the US when no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. Bush said he was sorry and that was it.... Will it being back all those lives lost (and still being lost in Iraq) ?? Why was he not tried for mass murder? He is no better than a Hitler or a Mussolini when it comes to killing people for no reason. Everyone and their brother knew it was just for oil that Iraq was attacked and now theres 2 trillions of mineral deposits found in Afghanistan.. ofcourse the contract for mining these would go to american firms and their allies... and they think we dont know...!
Thenkoo! I shall read it right away!
The war on Iraq is most definitely a power struggle by US to dominate the quickly diminishing oil reserves in the world. It's not a war about restoring democracy, about one-upmanship regarding possession of nuclear weaponry. It is a war perpetuated by the US, the capitalist superpower, to make a few extra dollars. One gallon of oil is not worth the many pints of blood lost. Bush is a maniac, UN as you rightly said is impotent and Afghanistan a tragic sidetracked victim.
Well Nitisha ...tempts me to read it, of course. I cannot find time at the moment.. but will surely read it soon ....
Also, regarding the "animal and human" comparison, I had coincidentally made a post about it just a few minutes ago. Would love if you tell me your opinion about mine...
