I'm sure you won't recognize this instantaneously, unless of course, you're a botanist or someone who knows North American flora a little too well, but this is a Joshua tree. Yucca brevifolia, to you pedants!
"The name Joshua tree was given by a group of Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century. The tree's unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer."- cites Wikipedia.
Coupled with this stunning photograph, the Biblical reference is enough fodder for the average writer to concoct wonderful stories and attribute mysterious qualities to this tree.
My love for The Joshua Tree is for a far less romanticized reason, more in tandem with my musical inclination.
This is the name of my all time favorite album, by the band U2.
Songs like "With or Without You", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking for' and "Running to Stand Still" continue to remain relevant rock classics, 23 years after they were first released. I don't feel the need to justify the impact their music has had on millions across the world. Meaningful lyrics, The Edge's magic with the guitar and Bono's soulful rendition of the lyrics, makes me fall more in love with the band every time I listen to them.
I rest my case. U2 is and always will remain my favorite band. And one day, I WILL find out why the name of the band is such!
Wondering why I write this today? Bono, the lead singer, was taken in for emergency back surgery today. Already in severe pain due to the partial paralysis of his lower leg, he suffered an injury during rehearsals for his upcoming US/Canada tour.
This Joshua is reaching her hands up in prayer too, hoping you recover soon, and that you get back to making real music.
I love you, Bono.
I can't live with or without you.
