The Problem with being a Pande.

"As it is, the name Pandey does not inspire much confidence."
-Page 62, The Tenth Unknown by Jvalant Sampat

This only proves a belief I've had ever since I was a child. I've always had issues with my corrupt policeman, or alternatively, paan-wala sounding surname.
Well, to my relief, my surname is Pande i.e. Pandey minus the svelte 'y' at the end,
so this lack of confidence does not apply to me.
Right?
RIGHT?

Firstly, thanks for buying The Tenth Unknown. Secondly, the line "As it is, the name Pandey does not inspire much confidence" is mouthed in the book by a Brit during the colonial era. This is because in the British Raj lexicon, Pandey became a synonym for "mutinous soldier" because of the actions of Mangal Pandey in 1857. If anything, you should be proud.

Mr. Sampat,

Frankly, I am absolutely stumped as to how you found this post. Google to the rescue? :P

Thank you so much for clearing up all this Pandey-related confusion. All the history associated with the surname makes me more than a little excited about having it as part of my name.

Also, I'm blog manager at the Librarywala blog, and devoured every word of your book a week ago. You may expect a great review there. :)
